Jewish Man Killed in Altercation in California

A 69-year-old Jewish man was killed in an altercation with a counter-protester at an Israel-Hamas war protest in Thousand Oaks, California, over the weekend.Β 

The victim, Paul Kessler, was involved in a physical altercation with a counter-protester or protesters, according to the Ventura County Sheriff's Office.Β 

Kessler fell backward during the altercation and hit his head on the ground. He was transported to a local hospital but died from his injuries on Monday.Β 

The Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office determined Kessler's death was a homicide. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility that the incident was a hate crime.Β 

The Jewish Federation of Los Angeles and the Greater LA office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations have both issued statements condemning the violence and calling for peace.Β 

The incident is still under investigation, and authorities have not released any further information.
