A design symbolizing energy and diversity
The medals symbolize “the energy and diversity of the athletes.” The design of the medals also represents Japanese culture, with ribbons showing the modern Ichimatsu Moyo Yacheard pattern and the Kasane no Irome Yakimono layering technique. The colors of Tokyo 2020 are added to the ribbon via more tolerant chemically recycled polyester fibers. While the back of the medal bears the Tokyo 2020 logo, the front depicts the Greek goddess of victory, Nike, in front of the Panathinaikos Stadium.
