Strong 8.2 magnitude earthquake hits Alaska
A tsunami warning was lifted a few hours after the strong earthquake was detected.
The United States had the most powerful earthquake in 50-year history
The earthquake was detected about 75 miles southeast of Chignik, Alaska, about 10:15 p.m. local time, the United States Geological Survey said.
The earthquake was felt throughout the Alaska Peninsula and on Kodiak Island, the Alaska Earthquake Center reported.
In Kodiak, tsunami sirens blared and people began moving to run higher ground as word of the warning spread

The alert issued by the National Tsunami Warning Center was in effect for about two hours across south Alaska, the Alaska Peninsula and the Aleutian Islands.
A tsunami watch was also briefly issued for Hawaii and canceled a little over an hour later
Citing severe earthquakes at or near sea level as the most common cause. The waves emerge out of the disturbance in all directions and can move into the basins of the ocean.
USGS According to the U.S., the quake recorded on Wednesday was 8.2 magnitude, or one of only 17 worldwide, since 1990.
